For over 50 years, our fully equipped Saginaw shop has provided top-tier industrial repair services to manufacturing plants, agricultural facilities, contractors, and commercial clients throughout Mid-Michigan.

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced In-Shop Generator Technician to perform diagnostic testing, teardown, repair, and bench testing on engine-driven generators, industrial generator ends (alternators), portable power units, and engine-driven welders in our Saginaw facility. This indoor, shop-based role focuses on electro-mechanical overhaul, electrical diagnostics, component rebuilding, and load testing in a controlled shop environment without the demand for daily field travel.

Key Responsibilities
• In-Shop Teardown & Diagnosis: Disassemble generator sets, alternators, exciters, and engine-driven welders (e.g., Lincoln, Miller, Generac, Kohler, Cummins) to isolate electrical or mechanical failures.

• Electrical Component Repair: Test, troubleshoot, and replace automatic voltage regulators (AVRs), rotating diodes, rectifier blocks, exciters, stator/rotor windings, slip rings, and brush assemblies.

• Engine & Mechanical Servicing: Perform basic engine diagnostics, governor adjustments, mechanical seal replacements, bearing fittings, and shaft alignment on shop-delivered generator packages.

• Bench & Load Testing: Execute no-load run testing, insulation resistance (megger) tests, surge testing, and resistive load bank testing using shop test panels to ensure equipment meets OEM specifications before customer delivery.

• Cross-Functional Shop Collaboration: Work alongside our electric motor mechanics and machinists to coordinate dynamic balancing, shaft turning, or housing sleeve repairs.

• Quality & Documentation: Document initial inspection findings, required parts lists, and final test parameters on repair work orders.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
• Experience: 6+ years of experience servicing, repairing, and rebuilding generator ends, engine-driven generators, or welder-generators in a shop or bench environment.

• Technical Skills:

o Solid understanding of AC/DC electrical theory, rotating electrical machinery, and generator excitation systems.

o Proficiency with diagnostic tools, including digital multimeters, megohmmeters, insulation testers, and load banks.

o Ability to read electrical schematics, control wiring diagrams, and equipment exploded-view manuals.

o Basic mechanical tool skills for engine teardown, precision measurement, and bearing installation.

• Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, operate overhead shop bridge cranes/hoists, and stand for extended periods on the shop floor.

• Attributes: Strong troubleshooting mindset, attention to detail, and pride in quality craftsmanship.
