Job Description

Job Title: Senior Manual Machinist (7+ Years Experience)
Company: National Electric Coil (NEC)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience + comprehensive benefits package
Company Overview
National Electric Coil (NEC) is a world leader in the manufacturing, repair, and engineering of high-voltage generator and electric motor coils, stators, rotors, and heavy rotating electrical equipment. Servicing the power generation, industrial, mining, and utility sectors globally, NEC combines decades of engineering heritage with precision craftsmanship to extend the lifespan of critical power infrastructure.
Position Summary
We are seeking a Senior Manual Machinist with a minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience to join our heavy equipment overhaul and manufacturing division. In this critical role, you will set up and operate a variety of large-scale manual machine tools—including large engine lathes, vertical boring mills (VBM), horizontal boring mills (HBM), manual mills, and precision grinders—to machine custom components for high-voltage industrial electric motors and generators. The ideal candidate thrives on low-volume, high-complexity job shop work with tight tolerances on large, heavy workpieces.
Key Responsibilities
• Setups & Operation: Perform complex, independent setups and operations on manual machine tools (large engine lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, radial drill presses, surface grinders).
• Component Machining: Machine, turn, mill, bore, and thread critical generator and motor components, including shafts, rotor spiders, end bells, collector rings, slip rings, commutator assemblies, and bearing housings.
• Precision Measurement: Work to tight tolerances (often within $\pm 0.0005$ inches or tighter) using precision measuring tools, including inside/outside micrometers, bore gauges, vernier calipers, and dial indicators.
• Blueprint & Drawing Interpretation: Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) callouts, and repair shop travel sheets.
• Rework & Modification: Perform precision fits for sleeve repairs, shaft journal rebuilds, undercut commutator segments, and turn rotor/stator mechanical fits.
• Material & Tool Selection: Select proper tooling, feeds, speeds, and cut depths based on material types (e.g., forged steel, copper alloys, stainless steel, cast iron, and specialized laminations).
• Quality Assurance: Document post-machining dimensions on quality inspection records and maintain rigid adherence to safety and quality control standards.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
• Experience: 7+ years of proven experience as a manual machinist in a heavy equipment, job shop, or electric motor/generator repair manufacturing environment.
• Machine Tool Mastery:
o Advanced proficiency operating large manual engine lathes and boring mills (VBM / HBM).
o Demonstrated skill machining large-diameter, long-length shafting and heavy castings.
o Experience with journal restoration, sleeve fitting, and shaft turning.
• Technical Skills:
o High-level mastery of precision inspection tools (micrometers, depth gauges, thread gauges, indicators).
o Comprehensive knowledge of metallurgy, cutting tool geometry, speeds/feeds, and shop math.
o Experience operating overhead bridge cranes, heavy rigging, and precision hoisting.
• Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, maneuver large workpieces using rigging, and work standing in a manufacturing shop environment.
Compensation & Benefits
• Salary based on experience and manual machining capabilities.
• Full health, dental, and vision insurance packages.
• 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
• Paid Time Off (PTO) and paid holiday schedule.
• Specialized training in heavy power generation equipment machining.
