Company Overview
Alliance Winding Equipment, Inc. (AWE), headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a global leader in custom specialty automation, coil winding machinery, and turnkey assembly systems for electric motor, stator, rotor, and generator manufacturing. Serving industrial, automotive, appliance, and commercial motor manufacturers across the globe, Alliance designs and builds individual stand-alone machines, multi-process cells, and fully automated production systems.
Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled Custom Machine Assembler to join our machine-building team in Fort Wayne, IN. In this hands-on hourly role, you will build world-class, custom automated machinery starting from piece parts through full mechanical assembly, electrical integration, and customer runoff. Working directly alongside mechanical and controls engineers, you will transform engineering designs into high-precision, automated electric motor manufacturing equipment destined for customer facilities around the world.
Key Responsibilities
• Mechanical & Pneumatic Assembly: Assemble complex custom machinery, sub-assemblies, precision tooling, and structural frames from individual piece parts, detail prints, mechanical engineering drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Electrical & Controls Integration: Mount electrical components, route wire harnesses, wire control panels, connect sensors, pneumatic valves, and execute complete machine plumbing and electrical wiring according to schematic drawings.
• Engineering Collaboration: Work hand-in-hand with Mechanical Engineers, Controls Engineers, and Toolmakers to review designs, resolve assembly/fitment discrepancies, and suggest manufacturability improvements.
• Machine Debug & Commissioning: Power up and operationalize newly constructed equipment; execute mechanical alignments, precision clearance checks, and dry-run cycling alongside controls engineers.
• Customer Runoff & Training: Drive and operate completed machinery during Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and customer runoffs; demonstrate equipment operation and assist in training customer technical teams prior to shipment.
• Quality & Workmanship: Ensure all mechanical tolerances, electrical connections, and pneumatic lines meet rigid company and industry quality standards.
Minimum Qualifications & Skills
• Experience: 2+ years of hands-on electro-mechanical assembly experience in custom machine building, industrial automation, or capital equipment manufacturing.
• Technical Proficiency:
o Ability to read and interpret complex mechanical assembly drawings, pneumatic schematics, and electrical wiring diagrams.
o Hands-on proficiency with precision measuring tools (micrometers, dial indicators, calipers) and standard shop hand/power tools.
o Solid understanding of mechanical drive systems, ball screws, linear guides, pneumatic cylinders, servo drives, and sensor alignment.
o Practical electrical assembly skills (point-to-point panel wiring, crimping, soldering, routing wire tracks).
• Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work standing in a shop floor environment, and operate overhead shop cranes and hoists safely.
• Work Ethic: Strong problem-solving mindset, high attention to detail, and ability to work effectively in a team-based custom job shop environment.
Preferred Qualifications
• Associate degree or technical certificate in Electro-Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or Mechatronics.
• Prior experience building electric motor production equipment, coil winders, or automated stator/rotor assembly machinery.
• Basic familiarity with PLC controls, sensor calibration, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
Compensation & Benefits
• Competitive hourly rate negotiable based on electro-mechanical assembly experience.
• Overtime pay opportunities during peak machine builds and runoff phases.
• Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance options.
• 401(k) retirement savings plan with company match.
• Paid Time Off (PTO) and paid holiday schedule.
• Clean, well-equipped, climate-controlled manufacturing facility.
