Position Summary
We are seeking an expert Senior Lead Tool & Die Maker with a minimum of 15 years of hands-on experience to join our team in Hazelwood, MO. In this technical leadership role, you will design, build, troubleshoot, repair, and modify complex progressive stamping dies, fixtures, and precision tooling. Additionally, you will leverage CAD/CAM software and G-code programming to optimize machining operations while serving as a senior technical mentor to apprentice machinists and junior toolmakers.
Key Responsibilities
Die Construction & Maintenance: Build, assemble, fit, debug, and repair complex progressive dies, draw dies, blanking dies, forming tools, and production fixtures to exacting engineering tolerances.
CAD/CAM & CNC Programming: Utilize CAD/CAM software (Mastercam, SolidWorks, or equivalent) to model tooling components, generate toolpaths, and write or edit G-code for CNC mills and machining centers.
Apprentice & Junior Team Mentorship: Actively guide, train, and mentor apprentice toolmakers and junior machinists; share trade expertise on die design, shop safety, machine setups, and precision troubleshooting.
Precision Machining & Grinding: Safely operate manual and CNC machinery, Wire EDM equipment, surface grinders, jig borers, and radial drills to fabricate replacement tooling components.
Troubleshooting & Press Tryout: Perform press tryouts and die debugging on production stamping equipment; diagnose part defects (e.g., burrs, springback, fracturing) and execute immediate tooling corrections.
Engineering Collaboration: Review customer blueprints, GD&T specifications, and CAD models alongside engineering teams to optimize tool design, material selection, and heat-treat requirements.
Minimum Qualifications & Technical Requirements
Experience: 15+ years of proven experience as a Tool & Die Maker in a precision metal stamping, die-building, or custom job shop environment.
Technical Mastery:
Advanced proficiency with CAD/CAM software (Mastercam, SolidWorks, or similar) for toolpath generation and 3D modeling.
Expert G-code programming, editing, and CNC control setup capabilities (Fanuc, Haas, or similar controls).
In-depth knowledge of progressive die design, strip layouts, tool steels (D2, A2, S7, Carbide), and heat-treating processes.
Mastery of precision measuring instruments (micrometers, optical comparators, height gauges, gauge blocks) to maintain tolerances within ±0.0002 inches.
Leadership & Mentorship: Demonstrated desire and ability to mentor apprentice toolmakers and foster a collaborative shop-floor learning environment.
Certifications (Preferred): Journeyman Tool & Die Maker card or NTMA / Department of Labor completion certificate.
Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and work safely around heavy stamping presses and precision machine tools.
